AS Jane walked away from the counter, leaving the Coke and the chips, she saw three things almost at once. She determined that yes, Henry and her car were gone, and there was a man on the floor behind the counter, just off to the edge of her vision. She could see him through a break in a rack of chapsticks and funny animal design car sanitizers. He lay up against the wall, hog-tied with rope. His eyes were wide open and he was looking at her like a drowning man about to go down for the final time. The last thing she saw was Green Monkey’s reflection in the glass door as he was coming up swiftly behind her, and even more swiftly, he brought a black bag down over her head and plunged her into darkness.

She tried to yell out, but sucked in a wad of cloth instead. And then she was hit in the head hard enough she went to her knees, and then she was hit again in the same spot and it was night time.
